2cm or 3cm? Choosing slab thickness
Thickness is not about strength in the abstract — it is about substrate, edge profile, weight and freight. Here is how the choice actually plays out.
Thickness is the specification buyers agonise over most, and the one that most often gets chosen for the wrong reason. It is not about strength in the abstract — almost every 2cm top you will ever sit at is perfectly structurally sound. It is about substrate, edge profile, weight and freight.
The short answer
3cm (30mm) for kitchen countertops and islands: it sits directly on the cabinets and takes a thicker edge without extra work. 2cm (20mm) for vanity tops, wall cladding and splashbacks, where lighter weight and lower freight matter more than the edge profile.

Why 3cm is the default for kitchens
A 3cm slab is rigid enough in its own right to span standard cabinet runs. Set it on the cabinets, cut a sink and a hob opening, and the stone carries the load. A 2cm slab does not have that rigidity, so it is normally bonded to a plywood or composite substrate — which is a perfectly good detail, but it is extra material, extra labour and extra height.
The other reason is the edge. Kitchen design in most markets reads 3cm as the "proper stone" thickness. To get that look from 2cm you have to build the edge up, either by laminating a strip underneath or mitering the front edge. Done well it is invisible; done badly it is the first thing a customer notices.
Why 2cm wins on vanities and walls
A vanity top is small, and the weight advantage is real: you save roughly a third of the material weight, which matters for shipping, for installers, and for the fixings holding a lid to a cabinet. On wall cladding the same logic applies far more forcefully — hanging 3cm stone on a wall is a structural question nobody wants.
The freight maths nobody mentions
Stone is cheap to cut and expensive to move. Because 3cm slabs weigh about 50 per cent more per square metre than 2cm, a container carries fewer square metres of them. That does not make 3cm wrong — but the difference belongs in your landed cost calculation at the quoting stage, not in a surprise when you book the freight.
Mixing thicknesses in one container
You do not have to choose one for the whole project. A typical order for us is 3cm for the kitchen tops and 2cm for the vanities and splashbacks, loaded together. That is a normal container and it is how most whole-house and multi-unit work is actually specified.
