What Taj Mahal quartzite actually is

Taj Mahal is a natural quartzite — a metamorphic stone formed when sandstone is compressed and heated until the quartz grains recrystallise. That process is why it behaves so differently from marble: it is denser, harder, and far less reactive to acids and heat. The colour is a warm white to cream background with gold, taupe and grey veining, which is exactly why it has become one of the most specified stones for high-end kitchens.

Thickness changes the application more than most buyers expect. 3cm is the default for kitchen countertops and islands because it can sit directly on the cabinets; 2cm is the usual choice for vanity tops, cladding and splashbacks. Our 2cm vs 3cm guide works through the trade-offs.

Finishes

Polished

The default. A mirror-level surface that darkens the stone slightly and makes the gold veining read sharply. Best for kitchen islands and vanity tops where you want the stone to look as dramatic as possible.

Honed

A smooth, matte-to-satin surface with no glare. It reads softer and more contemporary, and it hides fingerprints and water marks far better than polished stone — which is why a lot of bathroom and hotel work goes honed.

Leathered

A textured, low-sheen finish produced by brushing the surface. It feels like soft leather, masks scratches well, and is increasingly specified for outdoor kitchens and heavy-use commercial tops.

Where it gets used

• Kitchen countertops and islands — heat-resistant, hard-wearing, and one of the few stones that can take a hot pan without marking.
• Bathroom vanity tops — see bathroom applications. Denser and less stain-prone than marble.
• Wall cladding and full-height splashbacks — book-matched pairs are possible on request.
• Hotel casegoods and furniture tops — hotel TV cabinets, credenzas and guestroom joinery.

Care

Quartzite is low-maintenance but not maintenance-free. We recommend a penetrating sealer at installation for polished and honed surfaces, and resealing every 12–18 months depending on use. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and water — avoid acidic products (vinegar, lemon, descaling sprays) and ammonia-based glass cleaners, which dull the surface over time.

We cut, finish and pack it ourselves at our own facilities in Shuitou Town (China) and Rayong (Thailand) — four production lines, more than 12,000 m² of slab output a month.
